Haywood High School students receive unique learning opportunity

January 29th, 2025

HAYWOOD COUNTY, Tenn. — Another local school has the opportunity to learn in a unique way.

Haywood High School is the latest school to host the ‘Be Pro Be Proud‘ truck.

This gives students chance to learn about career opportunities that they may not receive otherwise.

“It is all for career exploration. It is seven stations of virtual reality simulations. So it’s just about kids and students being able to explore trades as an option,” said Madison Lewis, director of CTE at Haywood High School.

There were quite a few people in red shirts who are helping the students out. Lewis tells us who they are and what exactly they are doing.

“They are student ambassadors. So with the be pro be proud truck they need seven student ambassadors each day. So we pick seven high school students, they are different each day, and they come in here and they train on the simulators and they help lead the other students through,” said Lewis.

Being able to get hands on experience to learn about this jobs is a huge plus. Lewis says that it is much more beneficial than just staying in a classroom.

“A lot of these, you can’t be in eighth grade and go job shadow on a job site. There’s safety issues. This is a safe way for kids to explore and be able to start making those choices or decisions or just begin thinking about what they want to do out of high school,” said Lewis.

This is the second of four days that the truck will be at the high school. Other school systems like Tipton and Lauderdale counties and Ripley will also be coming to Haywood High School to get some experience.
